It has long been touted that drinking more water could help you lose weight. At the 240th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society this thought has now been back with proof.
In Boston at the American Chemical Society research was presented that showed that drinking 16 oz. of water before meals provided greater results than people that did not. Lead author of the study, Brenda Davy said, “In spite of popular beliefs that this is a weight loss strategy, it had never actually been studied in a clinical trial.”
The study consisted of 48 adults ranging in years of 55 and 75. All of whom were on low-calorie, low-fat diets. Over the course of 12 weeks the group was split up into two. One group was directed to drink the 2 8 oz. glasses of water before each of their 3 meals per day, while the other group was given no direction on what to drink in any way.
At the end of the study it was found the group that had the 16 total oz. of water before every meal lost just over 40% more weight than the group that did not drink the extra water.
Some experts attribute the extra weight loss to the “full” sensation that water can give before eating the meal. This in turn could have lead to less calories being eaten.
